Dear Discus Friends,
With the permission of Dave Hardy, a series of posts called "Tricks of the Trade" will sent to Discus-l. A Tip on raising, breeding, or keeping discus in general will be posted every Saturday morning. Hopefully the information given will generate discussion and perhaps new ideas.
Today's "Trick of the Trade" involves removing fry from the parent's side and acclimating them to their own tank...easily. Consider using a double barreled sponge filter such as Tetra's double brilliant in your breeder tanks. When the fry are mature enough to wean from the parents, simply set up approx. 20 gal. tank and partially
fill with water directly from the parent's tank. Have heater in place(preferably set to same temp). Remove one of the filter barrels from the parent tank and place in fry tank. Carefully net out the fry and move to new tank. NO bagging is necessary. The fry will almost instantly feel at home and can be fed immediately. Then finally over the next few days only siphon out debris on the bottom while filling the tank a little each day until full.
Good luck,
David Eaton
