To All:
This week's Trick changes directions a bit.

Six Common Reasons Eggs Turn White After Spawning.

1. Probably the most common reason eggs turn white after being laid is lack of fertilization. Many factors actually contribute to this. Usually the male fish is immature in young first time spawners.

2. Water temperature too high. Try lowering your water temp. to about 82-84F.

3. Water pH is too high. Lower the pH to about 5.2 or there abouts.

4. Death of egg from bacteria and/or high nitrate load. These are usually water quality issues and leads us to the next reason.

5. Poor water quality. If your water quality is low, of course, your fish may not even spawn. Increase water changes, being careful not to upset the pH of your general tank environment. If the water quality is good prior to spawning, some breeders stop changing water after eggs are laid. Just keep your pH from dropping by adding small amounts of Sodium Bicarb. Otherwise, water changes after the eggs are laid, may save a doomed batch.

6. Water hardness too high. Shoot for a total hardness less than 150ppm. 50-70ppm is found to be optimum in my tanks. If your tap water is too hard, you may need RO. Remember: total hardness in TDS is about 1/2 the value of water conductivity measured in microseimens. In other words, 50 ppm = 100us.

Good Luck!
Until next week,
